SACRAMENTO, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. Senate nominee Carly Fiorina will remain in a California hospital overnight for observation, her campaign said Tuesday.

Fiorina was admitted earlier in the day for treatment of an infection related to reconstructive surgery she underwent this year following treatment for breast cancer, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Fiorina, 56, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer, hopes to return to the campaign trail later in the week for the final run to the Nov. 2 election, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was not disclosed where Fiorina was hospitalized of what symptoms she had developed.

"While this will impact her campaign schedule today, Carly is upbeat and her doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery and be back out on the campaign trail soon," Fiorina's chief of staff, Deborah Bowker, said in a written statement.

Bowker told the Bee Fiorina was being treated with antibiotics and remained cancer-free.

Fiorina was diagnosed with cancer in February 2009. She was found to be cancer-free that October following treatment that included chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and radiation. Her reconstructive surgery was performed in July, the month after she won the California Republican U.S. Senate primary.
