Hispanics: Nev. GOP Sen. candidate racist

CARSON CITY, Nev., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Sharron Angle, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Nevada, released a campaign advertisement on illegal immigration that Hispanic groups say is racist.

Angle's ad, featuring burly Hispanic-appearing men toting weapons and showing up in police mug shots, says incumbent Democratic Sen. Harry Reid is tolerant of illegal immigrants, The Christian Science Monitor and The Atlantic in Washington reported Tuesday.

America's Voice, Mi Familia Vota and Campaign for Community Change, which are Hispanic and pro-immigration groups, said they are angry and will put out Spanish-language ads in an attempt to counteract the ad they say shows Hispanics as criminals and thugs.

Hispanic students questioned Angle as she was speaking at a high school about an ad of hers showing pictures of dark-skinned men with the phrase "illegal aliens." Angle told the students she didn't believe the men in the ad were necessarily Latino, and that, in fact, the students themselves didn't look definitively Latino.

"Some of you look a little more Asian to me," she said.

"Sharron Angle has decided to run one of the ugliest anti-illegal immigrants ad campaigns in history," Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, said.

Angle's ad says Reid, the Senate majority leader, has voted to give illegal aliens Social Security numbers and has sided with President Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon to "block Arizona's tough new immigration law."
