DUI suspected in LA school bus crash

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Drunken driving may have been a factor in the crash of a car into a school bus after the car apparently struck and killed one person, Los Angeles police said.

Dozens of students aboard the bus sustained injuries, most of them described as minor, the Los Angeles Times reported. The person killed was believed to be a pedestrian who was struck by a black BMW before the car hit the bus Monday.

A witness told the newspaper he saw the BMW run a red light before hitting the bus. The witness said the driver and a passenger jumped out of the car and ran but two construction workers who saw the collision detained the suspects, the Times said.

The California Highway Patrol said two people were taken into custody.

A passenger on the bus, Marco Valdez, 17, said he saw the BMW hit a pedestrian before swerving and hitting the rear of the bus -- which then overturned onto a Metrolink platform.

The bus was transporting students from the East Los Angeles Skills Center, an off-campus facility for students at LA's Roosevelt High School. LA Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda said 54 students were riding on the bus and 16 were treated for non-critical injuries.
