Kansas cops find mother of dumpster baby

EMPORIA, Kan., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The woman who left her newborn baby in a dumpster has been found, police in Emporia, Kan., said Saturday.

Both the mother, Christina Devine, 24, and the child are hospitalized, police Detective Lt. Ed Owens told KVOE-AM, Emporia.

Owens said officers and firefighters were called out to the Chapel Ridge Apartments Friday morning when the baby was discovered, breathing, in the dumpster. He said the boy was put there shortly after birth but did not go undiscovered for long.

Formal charges are pending against Devine, who was found after tips led police to an employee of a local business.

The baby boy, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces, was reported in stable condition.

Kansas has a safe haven law that lets parents drop off babies up to 45 days old at any fire department, medical facility or health department, no questions asked. No agency in Emporia or Lyon County has reported a safe haven incident, KVOE said.
