LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The doctor who helped "octomom" conceive octuplets says he made a mistake by implanting a dozen embryos at her insistence and against his better judgment.
Beverly Hills fertility specialist Dr. Michael Kamrava testified about implanting the embryos in Nadya Suleman at a Medical Board of California hearing that could lead to his license being revoked, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
"I'm sorry for what happened. When I look back at it, I wish I had never done it and it will never happen again," Kamrava testified.
Kamrava's license could be revoked if it's found he was grossly negligent in his treatment of Suleman and two other female patients, a 48-year-old who suffered complications after becoming pregnant with quadruplets and a 42-year-old diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer after receiving fertility treatments.
Kamrava, who helped Suleman conceive six other children before the octuplets, said he recommended implanting four embryos, or using embryos Suleman had already frozen with the goal of producing one baby.
But she disagreed, he said.
Kamrava testified he was "apprehensive" about implanting so many embryos but said Suleman promised him she would reduce the number of fetuses if she became pregnant with more than triplets.
The implantation procedure was the last time he saw her, he testified, but when he heard news reports in January 2009 about the local birth of octuplets he suspected it was Suleman.
