PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A jeweler and a fugitive from a jail were killed in an exchange of gunfire during an attempted robbery at a Philadelphia store, police said.

A second robber escaped in a car after the Thursday morning shootout at William Glatz Jewelers, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Police released footage of the suspect from security cameras Friday.

Deputy Police Commissioner William Blackburn said Kevin Turner, 22, was struck by two bullets and was pronounced dead in the store. Bill Glatz, 67, was wounded in the stomach and died at a hospital.

Turner, charged with drug, weapon and burglary offenses, had escaped from the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Center last week, police said.

Friends told the Inquirer Glatz was loyal to Northeast Philadelphia and refused to close the store his father founded on Rising Sun Avenue after he opened a suburban branch.

"He was too attached to the avenue, but all the people he was attached to aren't here anymore," said Sal LaValle, who owns Safes Unlimited across the street. "The turnaround has been crazy. Every year or two."

LaValle said he now plans to leave.
