Delay in extortion sentence requested

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The lawyer for a woman convicted of trying to extort money from University of Louisville men's basketball Coach Rick Pitino says he wants a sentencing delay.

Karen Sypher, 50, was convicted Aug. 5 on charges of extortion for fabricating rape charges against Pitino then trying to force him to give her a house, cars and $10 million in exchange for her silence, The Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported.

She was also convicted of lying to the FBI and retaliating against a witness, the newspaper said.

Sypher could receive a maximum sentence of 26 years in prison.

Attorney James Earhart filed a motion Tuesday in U.S. District Court asking for a delay of at least 30 days to address issues raised in a confidential pre-sentencing investigative report.

The report raises a number of issues that could have "significant impact" on the sentencing guidelines and the imposition of "an appropriate sentence in this case," Earhart said.

Sypher has been free on her own recognizance awaiting sentencing.
