Couple charged in baby's death, entombment

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A Brooklyn couple who allegedly ran a prostitution ring have been charged with killing a prostitute's baby and storing its body in concrete, officials said.

Illegal aliens Domingo Salazar and his wife, Norma Mendez, allegedly ran the prostitution ring from their New York apartment, and are accused of placing the body of the abused baby in a plastic tub and sealing it in concrete, the New York Daily News reported.

The couple kept the body in their apartment for 11 months, and "left their own children in an apartment with a decomposing body," prosecutor Jacqueline Kagan told a Brooklyn court.

Salazar allegedly fathered the boy, who died at about 3 months of age. He and Mendez were charged with manslaughter and child endangerment, the New York Post reported.

In July, the pair pleaded guilty to federal charges of smuggling women from Mexico and forcing them to work as prostitutes.

The body of Carlos Santillana was found after federal agents busted the sex trafficking ring in November. Prosecutors said Salazar and Mendez forced the baby's mother into prostitution to pay a $2,500 fee for smuggling her into the United States from Mexico, the Post said.
