NEW YORK, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Two New York City Council members are pushing legislation to regulate signage at medical clinics offering abortion alternatives.
The legislation proposed by Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilwoman Jessica Lappin, expected to be introduced Tuesday, would require signs at the entrance of those facilities to inform women the centers do not provide abortions or contraceptives approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, The New York Times reported.
The measure also calls for signs in facility waiting rooms to be unambiguous, letting women know that referrals for all options are not provided.
The legislation further requires the clinics to clearly state whether a licensed medical professional is on the staff.
The measure is being introduced partly in response to an investigation by Naral Pro-Choice New York that found crisis pregnancy centers feed women information that has been medically disproved.
Planned Parenthood of New York City said these centers do not provide a full range of alternatives to abortion like the morning-after pill and their staff members try to talk women out of having an abortion.
