Man arrested in stabbing of boy, 8

WESTBURY, N.Y., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A young New York man was in custody Saturday, charged with repeatedly stabbing an 8-year-old boy as the child played video games at a restaurant, police said.

Evan Sachs, 23, allegedly approached the boy from behind at Dave and Buster's in Westbury and plunged a 4-inch hunting knife into his back five times Friday night, the New York Daily News reported.

The boy made it to his mother, who was seated nearby, and collapsed. His father and a witness to the attack found Sachs in a bathroom and detained him until police arrived, the newspaper said.

Sachs, a movie theater employee who lives with his mother and two brothers in Merrick, was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

The child was in stable condition and was expected to recover fully.

Police hadn't determined why Sachs targeted the boy. Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department said there is "no link between the two at all."

"The attack seems to have been unprovoked," Smith said.
