U.S. sex offender fugitive found in Canada

CARBERRY, Manitoba, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A drifter taken in by a Canadian couple turned out to be wanted for sex crimes in four U.S. states, authorities say.

Kelly Garnett and her husband let "Jerry" and a female companion stay in their Carberry, Manitoba, home when they showed up last month claiming to be broke and looking for work. "Jerry" picked up a few bucks working odd jobs around town but his accent didn't seem right for someone who claimed to be from Newfoundland.

Eventually the Garnetts' suspicions led them to call the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It turns out "Jerry" is really Francis David Sherman, 58, a convicted sex offender wanted in four states by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Wednesday.

Sherman was turned over to U.S. authorities Sept. 22 and he is now in a North Dakota detention center.

Garnett says she and her husband will never let strangers stay with them again.

"I think I was lucky, and I thank God that I was lucky because if they would have thought that we were suspicious of them, who knows what would have happened," she told the CBC.
