Odane James, 28, of Miami allegedly left his daughter, Kimberly, alone in his car outside the Holiness Born Again Church of Jesus Christ in Miramar Sunday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
Approximately three hours later, Kimberly was discovered and police were contacted. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Tania Rues, a spokeswoman for the Miramar police, said the father has not been charged in the toddler's death.
"We're consulting with the state attorney's office to see if charges will be filed, which is routine in cases like this. It's an ongoing investigation," said Rues.
An autopsy was conducted Monday, the newspaper said.
"The primary cause of death was complications of hyperthermia," medical examiner investigator Thomas Steinkamp said.
