Media waits as rescued SoCal hiker rests

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles-area hiker who was lost for nearly a week in the desert was on the road to recovery Saturday, hospital officials reported.

Ed Rosenthal, 64, of Culver City, would likely spend the weekend at Hi-Desert Medical Center in Twentynine Palms where he was taken after being rescued in nearby Joshua Tree National Park, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"He's resting comfortably," spokeswoman Karen Graley told the Los Angeles Times. "He'll probably remain with us for the weekend."

Rosenthal hasn't spoken to the media yet, but that doesn't mean reporters aren't interested in his story. Graley told the Times Rosenthal's family had to hire a public relations firm to handle the crush of interview requests and would hold a news conference in Los Angeles sometime next week.

Rosenthal got lost and ran out of food and water while hiking alone in Joshua Tree Sept 24. While waiting for someone to find him, he wrote messages to his wife and daughter on his hat expressing his love and leaving instructions on what to do after his death.
