There was no immediate tsunami advisory from the Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii; however, the magnitude of the quake and its relatively shallow depth were cause for concern. The Tsunami Center advised that its monitoring capabilities in the Indian Ocean were limited.

An earthquake-caused tsunami struck Indonesia and other Indian Ocean nations in 2004, killing more than 184,000 people.
