President fares poorly in poll on economy

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The White House has scored poorly in a survey of what Americans feel and think about the economy and how President Obama has dealt with it, a poll indicates.

The president's ratings on his handling of the economy, 29 percent positive and 71 percent negative, are his worst yet, a Harris Poll released Wednesday showed.

The poll is bad news for the White House and the Democrats as the campaign for this November's midterm elections moves into high gear, with only 28 percent of the public believing the economy will improve in the next year.

Worst of all for Democrats campaigning across the country, the negative views held by large majorities of Republicans and independents are shared by many Democrats, the poll found.

And people over 65, who tend to vote more heavily than younger voters in midterm elections, are particularly pessimistic and gave the president even lower ratings than younger adults.

The poll was conducted online Sept. 14-20 among 2,620 adults.
