Fundraising coming from outside GOP

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Conservative candidates for the U.S. Congress are receiving financial backing from groups outside the regular Republican Party, an analysis indicates.

The analysis by the Los Angeles Times found that new organizations created outside the official party apparatus have pulled in more than $32 million so far thanks to a sophisticated fundraising operation.

The money, along with marketing research and advertising operations, is aimed at getting Republicans elected to the House and Senate this November.

American Crossroads and American Action Network duplicate almost all of the functions of the traditional GOP while often taking advantage of legal provisions that allow them to conceal the names of the people who foot the bill, the Times reported Monday.

American Crossroads and its affiliates are the offspring of Karl Rove, former George W. Bush strategist, and other senior GOP leaders who once worked within the regular party structure.

Former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman runs the American Action Network.
