A Kennedy objects to GOP ad quoting JFK

HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The son of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy has asked a Senate candidate in Connecticut to pull an online commercial featuring President John F. Kennedy.

Edward M. Kennedy Jr., the president of a financial services firm and Branford, Conn., resident, calls Linda McMahon's ad "dishonest," saying it implies the president would have backed her call for tax cuts, the Hartford Courant reports. He described the early 1960s as a "completely different economic time."

"You attempt to conflate your economic policies with those of President Kennedy's in order to capitalize on his legacy,'' Kennedy wrote to McMahon's campaign. "Please stop misleading voters."

Kennedy is a friend of the Democratic candidate, Richard Blumenthal.

Ed Patru, a McMahon spokesman, said the campaign is considering giving the ad more prominence. He said the younger Kennedy's uncle proposed tax cuts in August 1963, three months before his assassination, to create better incentives for financial risk-taking.

"That was the case 47 years ago, and it's the case today," he said in an e-mailed response.
