Tenn. auto mogul in critical condition

NASHVILLE, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A Tennessee auto dealer whose 22 dealerships employ 800 people in the state was in critical condition after a horseback riding accident, authorities said.

R.C. Alexander, 80, was injured in the accident Saturday and was in Vanderbilt University Medical Center, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported.

The medical center's public information officer, Leslie Hast, confirmed Alexander's condition but would not give out details of the accident.

The millionaire auto mogul has been described as an American success story, a farmer's son who came from humble origins to success, owning several homes, a herd of horses, thousands of acres of farmland and investment properties, The Tennessean said.

His dealerships consistently made him one of the Southeast's top sales performers, the newspaper said.
