Poll finds much distrust of Congress

ASBURY PARK, N.J., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A 62-percent majority of likely U.S. voters believe Congress can make any bad situation worse, a poll released Thursday indicated.

Democrats control both houses of Congress, but 53 percent of Democratic respondents agreed with the proposition, Rasmussen Reports said. Only 19 percent said they do not believe Congress can make things worse, while 19 percent were unsure.

Rasmussen, based in Asbury Park, N.J., has a reputation as a conservative-leaning organization. The company was a paid consultant on President George W. Bush's campaign in 2004.

In its release on the congressional poll, Rasmussen made a distinction between what it defined as mainstream voters and the political class, with distrust of government defined as a mainstream characteristic. The company said 75 percent of mainstream voters agreed Congress can make things worse, while 63 percent of the political class disagreed.

The telephone poll of 1,000 likely voters was conducted Sept. 6-7. The margin of error was 3 percentage points.
