MIAMI, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A Palestinian and a Cuban migrant were arrested in Florida on charges of attempting to buy firearms and explosives destined for the West Bank, authorities said.

Abdalaziz Aziz Hamayel, 23, who attended Hialeah Senior High, was arrested at Miami International Airport Aug. 30 after flying in from Amman, Jordan, and his co-defendant, Yanny Aguila Urbay, 24, was arrested Monday at his Hialeah home, The Miami Herald reported.

Aguila contacted a confidential government source in April 2009 on Hamayel's behalf to buy weapons and explosives, an FBI complaint says.

Hamayel then contacted the source and requested 300 M-16 rifles, 9mm handguns, Uzi submachine guns, silencers and grenades.

The informant set up a meeting between Hamayel and Aguila and an undercover police officer posing as the supplier.

That meeting and subsequent ones were secretly recorded, officials said.

At a June 11, 2009 meeting, Hamayel allegedly asked undercover officers for a picture of the weapons to show his people -- "proof'' for the money supplier that the weapons and explosives were available.

A week later, he told undercover officers he was going to Chicago. Instead, Hamayel left for the West Bank.

His whereabouts were unknown to federal agents for more than a year until Aug. 30 when he left Jordan for Chicago.

The same night he traveled to Miami, where he was arrested.
