MIAMI, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Igor moved slowly westward across the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday night and a tropical storm watch was posted for the Southern Cape Verde Islands.
At 11 p.m. EDT the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Igor was about 70 miles south of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, moving toward the west at 11 mph with top sustained winds of 45 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extended outward as much as 50 miles from the center of the storm, forecasters said.
Igor was expected to turn toward the west-northwest and gain forward speed Thursday.
On its forecast track, the center of the storm is expected to pass south and west of the Cape Verde Islands by Thursday evening, bringing 1 to 3 inches of rain to the area.
