YONKERS, N.Y., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A New York construction worker says the woman who married him in a donated gown and other wedding trimmings conned him about her alleged cancer.
Michael O'Connell told the New York Daily News that he believed Jessica Vega of Yonkers had leukemia when they married. He now says he is "disgusted."
"I thought she was dying and my goal was to give her everything she wanted before she did," O'Connell said Tuesday. "Now, I want to see the truth come out. If that means her going to jail, then let her pay for what she did."
O'Connell and Vega, both 23, married in a lavish ceremony with almost everything, from the gold wedding bands to an Aruba honeymoon was donated by well-wishers.
Vega says she sincerely believed she was terminally ill at the time but now says she may have been misdiagnosed. Her husband says she showed him a letter from The Westchester Institute for Treatment of Cancer & Blood Disorders that he now believes was faked.
The couple have a year-old son. O'Connell is seeking a divorce and may try to get custody of the boy.
