WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A fire in a group of privately owned stables at a West Virginia racecourse killed at least 27 thoroughbred horses, officials said.
When the fire broke out early Tuesday in barns adjacent to the Charles Town Races track, horse owners and others worked to free animals trapped by the flames, The Washington Post reported.
About 26 horses were saved, Chief Ed Smith of the Charles Town Independent Fire Company said.
"It was feeding time, and a lot of people saw the fire going, but it all happened very quickly," Ken Lowe, president of the Charles Town Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, said.
Two people, an employee of a nearby casino and a firefighter, suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire.
The fire destroyed three wooden barns and damaged a fourth, with property damage estimated at $1.2 million.
Charles Town, which opened in 1933, is about 70 miles from Washington and operates about 220 days a year, with annual gambling revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the Post said.
