NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Five people were injured early Sunday when a New York City taxi crashed into a coffee shop in the East Village, police said.
One of the victim, a 71-year-old customer at The Bean on First Avenue, was critically injured when the yellow sports utility vehicle jumped the curb and struck the building after being involved in a collision with another vehicle.
Besides the customer, the crash, which occurred around 1:25 a.m. EDT, injured two passing bicyclists, the cab driver and his passenger.
The New York Daily News said police were sorting out who was at fault in the original crash; although several witnesses said the cab was struck by a Jeep Cherokee that allegedly ran a red light.
The Cherokee driver, however, told the Daily News he had the green light and the taxi was driving at a high rate of speed.
