CHICAGO, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A former Chicago high school basketball star convicted of murdering his wife says he killed her after dreaming she was having sex with four of his old friends.

Kareem Cobbins, 36, offered the theory at a sentencing hearing Friday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The Joliet man was convicted earlier this year of stabbing his wife Tonya to death in 2005 while she lay sleeping next to their 3-month-old son.

Prosecutors said Cobbins planned the murder.

"He felt he couldn't live up to the picture everyone had of them as a perfect couple," Assistant State's Attorney Christopher Regis said. He said Cobbins showed no remorse for the killing, and did so for a "selfish" reason.

Addressing the court, Cobbins apologized for the killing and blamed his actions on a mental illness.

"I'm not going to stop trying to prove that something was wrong with me," Cobbins said. He said he had a blackout the night before the killing and "woke up from a dream where Tanya was in a sexual act with four guys I grew up with."

Cobbins' 5-year-old son witnessed the murder and is in therapy, the newspaper said.

The victim's family said they would not comment until the sentence is given on Sept. 28.
