LOS ANGELES, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A 9-year-old California boy whose parents were killed by an intruder tried to save their lives by offering the robber their wallets, court documents show.
Details of the May 20, 2009, stabbings of Brock and Davina Husted, who was pregnant, were included in affidavits used to support Ventura County, Calif., sheriff's detectives' search warrants that were recently unsealed, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Detectives said the Husteds' 9-year-old son told them he and his parents had just finished watching television when a gunman entered their house wearing a motorcycle helmet concealing his entire face except for his eyes.
The intruder ordered them to the floor and demanded money and jewelry.
The boy's mother told him to give the intruder her wallet from her purse and take cash out of her and his father's wallets.
The boy told detectives he placed cash and a wallet on the floor at the intruder's feet, then saw his parents run towards their bedroom followed by the intruder.
As the boy hid behind a couch, he told police, he heard his mother scream and the intruder run out of the house.
He found his parents in a pool of blood, he told detectives.
He and his 11-year-old sister ran to a neighbor's house for help.
The case went unsolved for nearly a year until detectives said they linked Jonathan Packer, 20, to the crime through DNA evidence on a motorcycle helmet visor left behind.
Packer was charged with murder, robbery and burglary.
