SALINAS, Calif., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A pilot escaped without serious injury Friday when a crop-dusting helicopter crashed on a coastal highway in California.
Police said the pilot, Frank Gomes, was flying in heavy fog when he came down on Highway 101 in Salinas just after 6 a.m., the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The California Highway Patrol said Gomes had only minor injuries.
Gomes and his sister, Christina Gomes Bellone, operate Gomes Farm Air Service, based in Salinas in Monterey County south of San Francisco. Bellone said her brother crashed shortly after takeoff from the Salinas airport.
"All I know is he was going over the freeway and something happened," she said.
"I think he probably got out of the helicopter by himself," she said. "Those helicopters are rather easy to get out of, a plastic bubble. They're not as cumbersome as an all-metal helicopter."
The Bell 47 helicopter turned over in the crash. The highway patrol said no cars were hit.
