AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Two Yemeni men abruptly changed their travel plans because of a missed plane, not because they were doing a terrorist "dry run," officials say.

The Netherlands released Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi and Hezam al Murisi without any criminal charge, ABC News reported Wednesday. The two were arrested Monday after flying from Chicago to Amsterdam on United Airlines.

"These two passengers have not been charged with any crime in the United States and we caution you against jumping to any conclusions," the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a statement Tuesday.

Soofi flew to Chicago from Birmingham, Ala., and Murisi from Murfreesboro, Tenn. Both missed their original flight from O'Hare to Amsterdam but their luggage was loaded on that plane.

Investigators say they believe Soofi and Murisi did not know each other and both were confused by a gate change at O'Hare.

Soofi's luggage contained a number of items that troubled screeners at the airport, including cellphones and watches wrapped in duct tape. Screeners found nothing illegal.
