Delta flight lands after mechanical issue

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A Delta Airlines flight from Miami bound for New York landed in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Monday after experiencing a mechanical problem, airport officials said.

The MD-88 jet with 142 passengers and five crew landed safely and taxied to a gate, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

A Delta spokesman said the jet failed to achieve adequate cabin pressure after taking off from Miami.

"As a cautionary measure, the flight was diverted to Fort Lauderdale,'' spokesman Anthony Black said.

Flight 173 had a scheduled departure from Miami International Airport of 7 a.m. and had been scheduled to arrive in New York at 10 a.m.

Black said passengers boarded another MD-88 to continue their flight.
