Danielle loses hurricane status

MIAMI, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The north Atlantic storm Danielle lost strength and its status as a hurricane Monday afternoon, returning to tropical storm status, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory that Danielle's maximum sustained winds had dropped to 70 miles per hour as it churned about 425 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. It had started out the day as a Category 1 hurricane.

The storm was moving to the east-northeast at 15 mph and was expected to weaken over the next two days. That course meant forecasters had lifted all coastal watches and warnings related to Danielle.
