U.S. climber's body found after 21 years

JASPER, Alberta, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The well-preserved remains of an American climber missing for 21 years have been found at the foot of Mount Snowdome in Canada, officials say.

Hikers found the body of William Holland Aug. 15 buried under ice and snow, still clad in his climbing gear, spiked boots and a rope slung over his shoulder, Postmedia News reported Saturday.

Holland had been climbing a frozen waterfall on the Alberta mountain's north face on April 3, 1989, when he met his demise.

Postmedia News said Holland, his partner Chris Dube, and another pair of local climbers had reached the summit when a storm rolled in, creating whiteout conditions.

Holland disappeared when a hardened lip of snow hanging over a cliff edge gave way beneath him.

The other three climbers survived the descent, though one suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Bad weather prevented the recovery of Holland's body.
