PARIS, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The head of France's national railroad Sunday said U.S. lawmakers could review records of its role in the deportation of Jews during World War II.

Guillaume Pepe told Radio France Internationale the archives of SNCF had been opened 20 years ago and were available for inspection by lawmakers from the United States.

SNFC is part of a French partnership eyeing a huge contract to build a high-speed rail line in California. The California legislature recently passed a law requiring bidders for state contracts to provide details of their involvement in wartime deportations.

Pepe said it was no secret that SNCF trains carried French Jews to concentration camps.

"We should not forget one thing: the SNCF, the railway workers were under the yoke of the Nazi occupiers, threatened with death," Pepe said. "And 2,000 railway workers were executed by the Nazis."
