Children allegedly killed in U.S. strike

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A U.S.-led airstrike killed six children and injured another Thursday in Kunar province in Afghanistan, a local police chief alleged.

The police chief said the children were killed when the airstrike hit a civilian home, Iran's Press TV reported.

The airstrike was in response to Taliban mortar fire on a U.S. base, Iran's state-owned news network said.

Civilians in the country's southern and eastern provinces have been victims of violence from both insurgent attacks and military operations, the report said.

The United Nations has put the number of civilian casualties at nearly 1,300 so far this year and the issue of civilian casualties has been a source of friction between Kabul and Washington, Press TV said.
