3.6 quake rattles Southern California

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A 3.6 magnitude earthquake rattled the Palm Springs, Calif., area early Saturday morning with no reports of damage or injures, authorities said.

The 7 a.m. temblor was centered 10 miles northwest of the community of Cabazon and was felt over a large part of the Palm Springs area as well as other parts of the Inland Empire and Orange County, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The earthquake was first measured as 3.7 but was subsequently downgraded, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Seismologists are unsure if the quake is related to several others occurring in the region since the 7.2 magnitude Easter Sunday in Mexicali, the Times said.

That quake, experts said, put pressure on two faults that run through the Inland Empire, the Times reported.
