KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The Afghan National Police force seized more than 15,000 pounds of a chemical used to make bombs and other explosive devices, officials say.
Afghan police discovered the ammonium nitrate fertilizer at the Kandahar customs office and detained four Pakistani suspects, the International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for the ANP, a demonstration of the increasing capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces," U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, said in the statement.
Intelligence reports to authorities in Kandahar City aided police in the seizure. Afghan security forces have confiscated as much ammonium nitrate in the past two months as they had in the previous seven, the statement said.
The ANP has about 107,000 members and recruitment efforts will raise the number to 109,000 by October.
