NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old girl was charged with felony drug sales after being arrested for peddling crack cocaine and marijuana on a New York City street, police said.
The unidentified girl "does not look 12," Inspector Michael Bryan, commander of the narcotics unit in the New York borough of Queens, told the New York Post. "We were very shocked to find out" her age.
She previously sold to undercover officers, Bryan said.
The girl's parents were not involved in the drug sales, police said. Police were trying to find out how the girl got involved.
Police arrested 42 other people, including one accused of murder, in 10 morning raids Wednesday in an area of the borough's Rockaway Peninsula that has long been the sight of gang- and drug-related activity, the Post said.
Investigators seized two Mercedes-Benz cars, one BMW, $14,000 in cash, 11 pounds of marijuana, more than 4 ounces of crack and 0.71 of an ounce of heroin, police said.
The investigation by police and the Queens district attorney's office began in March.
