WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Constitution should not be amended to prevent birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, an administration official says.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said such talk is wrong, The Hill reported.

Critics argue illegal immigrants often come to the United States for the sole purpose of winning citizenship for children born here, the report said.

"Any talk of amending the Constitution is just wrong," Napolitano said at a White House press briefing Friday.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted Republicans for suggesting the change, the report said.

"It's rich in its irony; it's wrong in its approach," Gibbs said.
