Mutilated Afghan girl meets U.S. surgeons

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The Afghan girl whose mutilated face on the cover of a news magazine brought international outrage and sympathy has met with U.S. doctors, officials said.

The 18-year-old, identified only as Bibi Aisha (Miss Aisha), said her abusive husband cut off her nose and ears -- with Taliban approval -- to punish her for running away, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The controversial photo of Aisha appeared on the Aug. 9 cover of Times magazine with the headline, "What Happens if We Leave Afghanistan."

A Southern California medical foundation paid to bring Aisha to Los Angeles where she is staying with a Pashtun-speaking Afghan host family in preparation for reconstructive surgery to repair he nose and ears.

Aisha has met with surgeons from the Grossman Burn Center twice since arriving last week, center officials said.

"The purpose of these meetings has been to evaluate her physically and emotionally in order to determine the best course for her treatment, and to explain to her everything the surgeries will entail so she can make informed decisions before consenting to moving ahead with the operations," Grossman Burn Foundation spokeswoman Stacy Tilliss said.
