NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- New York transit officials say the nighttime closure of Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge will begin later this month and continue until 2014.
The nightly lane closures are part of a $508 million project that will be the first major construction work on the landmark bridge in a decade, the New York Daily News said Saturday.
The city and the federal government are paying for the project, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg said would provide hundreds of jobs and include $30 million in economic stimulus spending. The plan includes new pavement, the expansion of two ramps and a paint job.
The closures will run from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend closures begin at midnight and end at 7 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday, the city's Department of Transportation said.
Pedestrian and bicycle lanes will remain open; however, late-night motorists coming out of Brooklyn will have to detour over the Manhattan Bridge.
