SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Schaumburg, Ill., say they issued two citations to pet owners who left their dogs in sweltering heat.

The Schaumburg News reported police acting on an anonymous call found an unleashed beagle outside with no access to water or shelter from the blazing sun.

An officer found the beagle panting heavily outside a house and when no one answered the door the officer gave the dog water and took it to Golf Rose Animal Hospital. The dog's owners, Thomas and Delores McMahon, were cited for violating the Humane Care for Animals Act, improper care of animals and permitting an animal to run at-large.

The person who called police had found the beagle and returned it to the home.

Police also cited the owner of a Shih Tzu, a long-haired dog, left inside a minivan where the temperature climbed to 116 degrees Tuesday. The owner, Ock Soon Kim, 59, of Schaumburg, said she had left the dog water and a window of the van open 8 inches.

Kim told police she had been in a store nearby.

Both canines are expected to be OK.
