Bank robber shoots himself in taxi

CHICAGO, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A bank robber in Chicago shot and killed himself in the back seat of a taxi he had used in his getaway as police closed in on him, authorities said.

The man hailed a cab and told the driver to wait as he entered a Bank of America branch on the city's Northwest Side Tuesday. Chicago police and the FBI said he demanded money from a teller, warning he had a bomb in his briefcase, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The man fled in the waiting taxi, but a police officer witnessed the "suspicious" behavior and followed the cab for a mile.

The officer and another responding police forced the taxi to pull over, and as they approached the cab, the suspect fatally shot himself in the head, authorities said.

The police bomb and arson unit was called to the scene and blew up the briefcase "out of an abundance of caution," but no explosives were found inside, FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates said.

The robber had no identification on him, police said, and his identity is unknown.
