NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Historian and intellectual Tony Judt, author of the seminal "Postwar," died of Lou Gehrig's disease in New York at the age of 62, New York University said.
Judt was noted for his study of European history, including "Postwar," considered a landmark look at the continent in the aftermath of World War II.
The New York Times said the British-born Judt was an early Zionist who also embraced various left-wing movements in his youth. He later developed a hearty skepticism of not only leftist ideologues but the super-power role of the United States.
He also became a proponent of a one-state solution to the standoff between the Palestinians and Israel, for whom he had served as an interpreter during the Six-Day War. The Times said his evolving view of Israel as an occupying force put him at odds with pro-Israel activists.
Judt taught at NYU since 1987 and delivered a lecture from his wheelchair last fall.
Memorial arrangements were not announced.
