Mutilated Afghan teen arrives in LA

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The Afghan teen whose nose and ears were cut off by the Taliban and was featured on the cover of Time magazine has arrived in Los Angeles for medical treatment.

Dr. Peter H. Grossman, co-director of the Grossman Burn Centers in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and his wife Rebecca, chairwoman of the Grossman Burn Foundation, saw the girl on TV and decided to pay to bring her to Los Angeles, find her a host family and pay for her treatment with foundation funds, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The 18-year-old teenager, identified only as Aisha, told Time magazine her husband mutilated her at the direction of the Taliban after she tried to run away from her abusive family. Her cover photo appeared with the headline, "What Happens if We Leave Afghanistan."

Her treatment could include a prosthetic nose or reconstruction of her ears and nose using bone and tissues from other parts of her body, the Times said.

"What I'd love to be able to do with Aisha is to give her a permanent solution from her own body," Grossman said.
