Florida tot death blamed on boxing lesson

HOMESTEAD, Fla., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A Miami-area man told police he was giving his 2-year-old son a boxing lesson when he allegedly spent 15 minutes fatally punching the boy in the face.

Miami-Dade police said Lee DeJesus, 23, of Homestead, was being held Wednesday on child abuse and neglect charges stemming from the death of young Willy Brown the night before.

According to police affidavits, DeJesus told detectives he was showing Willy the basics of the sweet science Monday and ended up knocking him off the bed.

"The defendant was teaching the victim to box and the defendant placed 16 ounce boxing gloves on his fists," the affidavit said. "The defendant then punched the victim approximately 15 times to his face, head, torso and shoulders."

The Miami Herald said Wednesday that DeJesus allegedly first attempted to pin the blame for Willy's injuries on a babysitter and has a past history of arrest for relatively minor incidents such as marijuana possession.
