Hundreds trapped by flooding in China

BEIJING, July 31 (UPI) -- About 700 people remained trapped by flooding Saturday in the Uighur Autonomous Area in western China, officials said.

The Tarim River area has been hit by the worst flooding in eight years, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported.

Bad weather hampered an effort to use a military helicopter to rescue those trapped on Tianshan Mountain.

The group includes local residents, construction workers and tourists.

In Northeast China, 55 tourists from South Korea spent four hours stuck in a bus before being rescued. One of the group told Xinhua a bridge destroyed by high water had left them unable to proceed.

The group had been in China four days when they became trapped.

China has had a long spell of severe weather this summer with heavy rains destroying crops and inundating many areas.
