"It appears that the oil is now contained, and we are transitioning to our cleanup plan," the Calgary-based company said.

The company said about 19,500 barrels of oil leaked from the pipeline near Battle Creek, Mich., but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the amount could be as high as 24,000 barrels.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer of Michigan, a member of the House subcommittee that oversees the nation's network of oil and gas pipelines, said his panel would launch an investigation into the leak and the company's response and cleanup efforts.

The Battle Creek Democrat accused Enbridge of failing to promptly report the leak to federal authorities, delaying its response, the Detroit Free Press reported.
