SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill., July 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Postal Service says a communications breakdown led to a package of a woman's cremated remains being lost in transit to Illinois for more than a week.
The ashes of Ruth Fromer's mother were delivered to her home in South Holland, Ill., this week after disappearing in the system while being shipped from Phoenix.
The Chicago Tribune said Friday a rescheduled burial service for the ashes of Mabel Bink would be conducted.
The Postal Service told the Tribune the package turned up at processing plant in Elk Grove Village Thursday after workers read a story about the missing ashes in the newspaper.
Fromer had reported the package missing at the post office in South Holland, but the report was apparently not sent on to the main Chicago office. As a result, no one outside of South Holland was aware of the missing parcel.
"How it got lost (in the first place) is something we're still trying to solve," said Postal Service spokesman Mark Reynolds.
