SACRAMENTO, July 30 (UPI) -- California meteorologists said the capital is marking its coldest summer in at least 3 years, while San Francisco temperatures are only slightly below average.
Alex Mergher of the Sacramento weather office said the city's downtown, where it was 53 degrees at 7 a.m. Thursday, is experiencing its coolest summer in at least three years while temperatures in San Jose and across the Santa Clara Valley are averaging 10 degrees below average for this time of year, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.
Meteorologists said San Francisco has been measuring an average 63.3 degrees this month, only slightly below the 65.2-degree average.
Bob Benjamin, a forecaster for the National Weather Service office in Monterey, Calif., said the temperatures, attributed to thicker than usual fog along the coast, don't quite reach record status.
"It certainly is a cool year but not a record cold summer," Benjamin said.
