Woman under house arrest in smuggling case

DALLAS, July 28 (UPI) -- A Russian-born U.S. citizen is under house arrest in Texas, accused of attempting to smuggle night-vision scopes into Russia without a license, officials say.

Federal agents discovered a night-vision weapons sight and two advanced rifle sights stuffed in Anna Fermanova's luggage at New York's JFK International Airport on March 1, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The items were confiscated and Fermanova was allowed to continue on her flight to Moscow where she lives with her husband, the newspaper said.

She was arrested July 15 when she returned to the United States to visit family in Texas.

Night-vision scopes are among defense articles on the U.S. Munitions List that require a license from the Department of State before they can be exported, officials say.

Fermanova's lawyer said his client bought the scopes legally online for her husband, who wanted them for a friend who is a hunter.

She remains under house arrest at her parents' home in Plano, Texas, until her case can be heard in New York, the Morning News reported.
