ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 28 (UPI) -- A 10-foot-long alligator roaming canals and culverts in St. Petersburg, Fla., has been sentenced to death -- if an alligator control agent can find him.

Charles Carpenter, a trapper and the agent for Pinellas County, told The St. Petersburg Times state wildlife officials authorized the use of lethal force Tuesday. He said he has been trying to trap this particular alligator for two years, and it has become very good at avoiding snares.

On Monday, there were reports the alligator had eaten a dog, followed by a reported sighting on Tuesday.

"We came out and looked for him and couldn't find him," he said. "I've heard a few different stories about him. I just take it with a grain of salt."

Gary Morse, a spokesman for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, said some St. Petersburg residents may have been feeding the alligator illegally.

"Feeding gators is about the most dangerous thing anyone could do other than jump in the water and wrestle them," he said.
